Neuf (France)- 297,000 In Canada, Videotron is the leading VOIP SP with about 42K customers while Shaw has 20K. I would guess-timate that Vonage has between 15K to 20K and Primus Canada has 10K to 15K.
Voxilla Comes to Canada
Voxilla, which offers Internet telephony equipment and industry news, has decided to open for business north of the border - in Vancouver to be exact. In light of my post on Canada's VOIP landscape, it was pointed out another player is SpectraVoice, which provides service to residential and small business customers. The company's residential plans, available in eight cities in Ontario, Quebec and B.C., cost $14.99 to $39.99 a month.
Primus TalkBroadband will be available at Future Shop/Best Buy stores in Canada
It's not up on Primus' press release page, but this comes from Canada NewsWire: PRIMUS Telecommunications Canada Inc. (PRIMUS Canada) is partnering with Best Buy and Future Shop to make TalkBroadband(TM), Canada's leading Voice Over Internet Protocol (VoIP) phone service, available at retail outlets across the country. Now what Future Shop/Best Buy should do is have a live version of TalkBroadband set up in their stores, but set it so that you can only call other TalkBroadband users, including those in other stores. What the heck: let them call anyone in North America -- it's only $40 a month, after all, and would pretty much drive home the advantages pretty clearly.
Bell Expands VOIP Service
Looks like Bell Canada is getting a little more aggressive with VOIP with the launch of a new service apparently aimed at small and medium size businesses. The Bell Business IP Voice plan features all the regular bells and whistles as well as unlimited LD in Canada for $64.95 a month. At $64.95, the service may be somewhat expensive for residential customers but what's more interesting is the new markets where it's being offered: Ottawa, Brampton, London, Quebec City, Hull and Montreal. Given it's a hosted service, can it only be a matter of time before Bell rolls VOIP out to consumers in these markets? This would solve the riddle why Bell has limited its residential VOIP service to only four cities in Quebec. Bell's small business service compared with Vonage's Small Business Unlimited plan, which sells for $69.99.

Everything You Wanted to Know About VOIP
Andy Abramson picked up on an excellent story on Slate that provides a comprehensive looking at VOIP service providers. It looks at most of the major players - Skype, VoiceWing, Packet8, Vonage, CallVantage - and grades them on sound quality, reliability, international calling, portability and bells and whistles. AT&T's CallVantage was the winner while BroadVoice trailed the pack by a wide margin. Perhaps an enterprising telephony reporter can do the same thing for service providers in Canada.
