Wait and see. FCC please don't straitjacket VoIP by making it implement 911 exactly as the PSTN. In his blog over at ZDNet, Russell Shaw (who, like me, is sort of opinionated) posts some good comments this week. First, he’s got a rather cynical rebuttle to the comments of executives at SBC and Comcast regarding the potential for them to abuse their power to block VoIP. Second, Russ expects VoIP carriers to begin using lock-in strategies such as early termination fees. Russ argues that fees are an important component in service providers’ revenue strategy—and he’s right. I got banged for an additional $41 for short-paying my Cingular bill this month—and my monthly service is only $50 to begin with! Insightful stuff—go check it out.
