Now that I’ve gotten past the initial excitement of Google entering the world of Voice over IP, I’m a little disappointed with a few aspects of the Google Talk jabber network: - Where’s the uber-cool Google voice search stuff I’ve been imagining? - Why didn’t Google have the common sense to allow PC-to-Mac VoIP calls instead of forcing PC and Mac users to only VoIP with users of their own platform? - Where’s the uniqueness of this product? Google Makes IM/VoIP Play, Releases Google Talk
Google has launched an instant-messaging (IM) program that allows text chat and computer-to-computer voice connections, a move that highlights the search giants increasing competition with Yahoo, Microsoft and America Online. You can download Google Talk here. Google also makes it very clear that you do not need Google Talk to use their service, and they provide detailed instructions on using other IM clients to connect to Google Talk. Update: Micheal Robertson announces partnership with Google to promote the use of open standards in VoIP/IM.
Google's New Messaging Service Includes VOIP
Google enters the already crowded field of instant messaging, with a new service, Google Talk. Integrated into Google's e-mail program, the tool allows users to type messages and speak to each other over their Internet connection. But it currently does not work with AOL, Yahoo or MSN instant message services.
